What makes us Filipino
Do we, Filipinos really have an identity? Just by thinking that we are Filipinos, and what are the things that makes us Filipinos? There must be a significant cause why we are called Filipinos. We have different reasons why we Filipinos are deemed to be Filipinos. According to Montelibano (2014), “They mostly mentioned traits and culture, love of country, love of the Filipino people. But few, an embarrassingly few, gave the most succinct and fundamental answer, the most important of all correct answers. And that is, “I was born in the Philippines.” Even though we know why we are Filipinos we still need to know what are the reasons when sometimes we think that we have what you call an “Identity Crisis.
Before we start discussing the media form, What really is Filipino identity? The media form that i chose to discuss here in the media log is a news article about the Filipino identity. The news article is titled "Our land, our seas, our identity," written by Jose Ma. Montelibano (2014). It talks about what makes us Filipino and also, what were the experiences in the past that made us today, in other words, it talks about what are the factors that affected us being Filipinos today.
By reading this, i both felt ashamed and proud because, First, I felt ashamed because we all know we Filipinos have been colonized by three colonizers namely Japan, US, and Spain and learned from them that the right of the land must be earned unlike those people who are natives, they were taught that the land is for everybody. Second, I felt proud because we Filipinos have a deep history in our culture, our traits that we know that every Filipino has, and of course According to Montelibano (2014), "They mostly mentioned traits and culture, love of country, love of the Filipino people." It was heart warming that mostly Filipinos gave a decent answer in the question "What makes you Filipino?"
This message is sent for it to be an eye opener for us and to show how rich is our culture and how we should take care of its beauty and cultivate so that the Filipino Identity will remain. As said in the title of the article, "Our land, our seas, our identity so it means that our land, our seas, they gave birth to the Filipino race" (Montelbano, 2014). Just by reading this text we can confirm that we Filipinos are Filipinos because of our land and our seas without these what would we be? According to Montelbano (2014), If our islands now known as the Philippines belonged to Malaysia, or Indonesia, or China, we would be Malaysians, Indonesians or Chinese. We will not be Filipinos. There would be no Filipinos.
